Influence of European law on Dutch and Czech legal language: A comparison
Abstract
The subject of the following contribution is the importance of legal translation in multilingual Europe. After mapping the characteristics of legal translation and legal communication, attention will be paid to the specific situation of the European Union in the context of multilingualism and translation services. Even though all the official languages of the European Union have the same status on paper, we will take a look at the real situation and especially at the forming of the so called “working languages” and the use of them in the most important institutions of the European Union. An interesting perspective will give us the comparison of the official amount of source languages in translation in 1997 and in 2013 and the amount of translated pages per target language. The strong dominating position of English will be obvious. As a case study, the position of two less spoken European languages, Dutch and Czech, is explored
