A Few Remarks on the Latin Infinitive Futuri Passivi

Abstract

The article discusses the Latin infinitive futuri passivi. On the basis of the works by F. Letoublon and R. Coleman, and especially of examples presented in them, both the origin of the infinitive and its syntactic relations are discussed. It turns out that this verb structure initially revealed syntactic ties that are different from the ones that can be observed at its later stage that is considered to be the proper infinitivus. Syntactic relations that allow such a conclusion may be unambiguously pointed to when infinitivus futuri passivi occurs in the construction nominativus cum infinitivo. Other constructions are not authoritative.
