Abstract

This article is a short analysis of the provisions of the privilege given by the Habsburg Holy Roman Emperor Charles V on 23rd March, 1530, in which the Emperor granted the Malta and Gozo islands (feudal fiefs of the Kingdom of Sicily) as well as the fortress of Tripoli to the Knights of St John of Jerusalem (also known as the Knights Hospitaller) as a fief. The author of the article characterised the interdependences between the Emperor and the authorities of the Knights Hospitaller, as well as the legislative, executive and judicial powers of the state of the Knights of Malta. In the article some fragments of the Emperor's privilege are cited in Polish and in Latin (in the footnotes).

The article contains also a short historical outline of Malta and its political system between the 11th and 16th century. The interdependences between the Kingdom of Sicily and Malta are also mentioned.

The relationships between the Maltese Catholic Church and the Order of St John are also described, as well as the way of choosing the Bishop of Mdina.
