Abstract

The issue of women’s dignity and their place in the community of the Church is of particular importance in contemporary ecumenical thought. This problem has remained an important area of concern of the World Council of Churches since the very beginning of the organization which was the first Assembly in Amsterdam (1948). This continuous concern of the ecumenical movement has been accompanied by the significant social, political, religious and economic changes in the world. The article examines some founding demands of the World Council of Churches concerning the place of women in the church to answer the question of whether (and to what extent) the WCC has satisfied these demands in its own structures, institutions and policies and in the life of its member churches.
