Abstract

The rites of holy orders administered to presbyters were shaped in the Roman liturgy over the centuries. Liturgical documents dating back to the period of the so-called old Roman liturgy are evidence of this process. First of all the Ordines Romani and Roman sacramentaries belong here. These documents laconically describe the very moment of administering holy orders. The laying on of hands by the bishop and saying the words of the prayer of ordination were the essential acts. The ceremony was concluded with offering the sign of peace to the ordained person, which was followed by proclaiming the Gospel and continuing the Holy Mass.

The ceremony of administering holy orders to presbyters in the old Roman rite was quite simple, and then starting with the 8th century it has begun to undergo various changes, which resulted in expanding the liturgy of administering holy orders considerably. According to the rule lex orandi lex credendi liturgy is an expression of the faith of all the Church. Hence its basic shape and the contents of particular prayers and texts correspond to the heritage constituted by the treasury of faith handed down over the centuries. This is also to a large degree true of the rites, by which the sacrament of holy orders is administered.
