The “modern classicism” seems to be very important current in the art of the interwar period. Its sources coincided with increased interests in classical and renaissance art. The other cause was the First World War which impelled a search for classicism as an art of calm, harmony, order and discipline. The “modern classicism” was also a part of anti-impressionist and anti-academic reaction. It was considered conservative and reactionary. Later, as the new tendency was winning a support of many outstanding art critics like Waldemar George, Rene Huyghe, Elie Faure and Waclaw Husarski, the classical current in modern art was regarded as dominant and universal. The critics wrote on the classicism until the Second World War, in particular in 1937, when International Exhibition in Paris took place. The critic̓s attention was also focussed on the problem of perfect art and reception of old masters of Renaissance and Neo-Classicism. All the critics stressed a need for searching for human values and focussed on the eternal values in the art. It was a reaction against an excess of ideas and images in the art of buffoons full of genius. The adherents of “modern classicism” considered it original fusion of old tradition and the avante-garde art of the 20th century.
