Abstrakt

The above review of the ancient testimonies of the life and writing of Aristotle, collected and commented by T. Düring, we have confined ourselves almost entirely to their specification and short presentation. Yet even the above presentation allows us to learn that these testimonies make not only a rich material which enables us to reconstruct, in a fairly precise manner, the course of the life and scientific output of the Stagirite. They also give us a broad and varied image of the evaluation of his person by the philosophers, historians and doxographers who were close to him in terms of time. There are some texts which are particularly valuable when it comes to get to know Aristotle as a man. We mean here the following documents: his testimony and poetic works with which he honoured the memory of his friends. The ancient biographies, especially their accompanying Catalogs, are an invaluable source for the reconstruction of the man's character and the lot of his writings before they had been edited by Andronicus.
