Abstract

The author sought to show the image of Podlasia, as it was described by young Stefan Żeromski in the years of 1887-1890 in his Diaries. The future great Polish writer was already then distinguished with an extraordinary ability to observe the surrounding world, therefore his reports can be regarded as a faithful description of the then reality.

The excerpts from the Diary quoted here show, first of all, the fortunes of the people of Podlasia under Russian partition, thus various manifestations of the process of Russification and the persecution of Unites.
