Sophocles in Aristophanes' Comedies

Abstract

The paper depicts the problem of the presence of the figure and tragedy writing of Sophocles in Aristophanes' comedies. The presentation of the passages of concrete tragedies (both preserved and lost), the analysis of allusions, the reference to them and attempts to read out the relationship of the comedy writer to the representative of the „great three,” seek to show an integral approach to the question under study. Therefore the paper is not only a list of motives or contents taken by Aristophanes from the tragedian, but it brings out their context and aim to which they served. Furthermore, it records several (out of many) lost tragedies, the parts of which Aristophanes placed in his comedies, giving us valuable information about these plays.
