A Polish Jeremiah: Biblical and Devotional Phraseology in the Poetry of Kornel Ujejski
Abstract
Despite their Old Testament poetics (a prophet lamenting his people, the people of God), the poems under study contain very little Old Testament phraseology. But there is a very high number of „New Testament” expressions. These include genuine Biblical phrases, but also expressions whose form is reminiscent of turns of phrase found in Catholic religious hymns. It is clear that the texts of hymns and prayers, as well as the Bible, were an important source of inspiration for the poet.
