The Greatness of the Littleness and the Depth of the Gentleness: Adjectives petit and doux in the Writings of Saint Therese of Lisieux and Their Polish Translations
Abstract
Even though the cult of Saint Therese of Lisieux is quite widespread in Poland, the doctrine of “the greatest saint of modern times” still remains largely unknown in the country. When probing into the reasons of such circumstance, we may raise some questions concerning the Polish translation of the writings of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus. In this paper, we will focus in particular on two specific adjectives which frequently emerge under the pen of Therese, i.e. petit [small] and doux [gentle]. This will give us some necessary insight, which will help us determine to what extent the Polish translation could serve the right understanding of the Teresian message.
