Abstract

The article presents selected dimensions (and in the author’s opinion the leading ones) of upbringing that point to the specific character of the course of this process in the family. They concern its prototypical, relative, complementary and progressive character. These dimensions seem to be especially important in the initial characterization of the educational function that is typical of the family and that is carried on by it. They can be considered the key ones, albeit certainly not the only ones, as e.g. the issues of communication, family atmosphere, styles of upbringing, styles of education, educational consciousness and the like should also be included here. However, the aspects presented above seem to be superior, even if for the reason that they imply a lot of other, more specific problems, as well as because of challenges offered by modern times, for instance the issue of identity formation, or of deprecating parental roles in some circles, and promoting the cult of professional or economic career. The presented issues are a special object of cognition in family pedagogy, and they are described from the perspective of this pedagogical sub-discipline.
