Citation Guide

Notes and bibliography

Notes and bibliography should follow the MLA standard of citation (8th edition).

NOTES

The MLA standard of citation consists of in-text parenthetical references accompanied by an alphabetical list of Works Cited supplied at the end of the text. The in-text references use the author-page method. For example:

“They [the Russian participants] don’t comprehend the degree to which their thinking is imperialistic [...]” (Miłosz 237).

The above in-text reference (Miłosz 237) points to the following entry in the Works Cited:

Miłosz, Czesław. A Year of the Hunter. Translated by Madeline G. Levine. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1994.

If there are two or more authors of the same surname, the first initial of each author should be supplied besides the surname. If this does not help to differentiate them, the whole first name should be included, e.g.:

“They [the Russian participants] don’t comprehend the degree to which their thinking is imperialistic [...]” (C. Miłosz 237).

or

“They [the Russian participants] don’t comprehend the degree to which their thinking is imperialistic [...]” (Czesław Miłosz 237).

If two or more works by a given author are listed in Works Cited, the title or an abbreviated version of the title should be included, separated from the surname by a comma, e.g.:

“They [the Russian participants] don’t comprehend the degree to which their thinking is imperialistic [...]” (Miłosz, A Year 237).

If the author was mentioned earlier in the text, the title should be supplied in lieu of the surname, e.g.:

As Miłosz noted: “They [the Russian participants] don’t comprehend the degree to which their thinking is imperialistic [...]” (Year 237).

If the author and the title were mentioned earlier in the text, mere pagination in parenthesis will suffice, e.g.:

As Miłosz noted in the diary The Year of the Hunter: “They [the Russian participants] don’t comprehend the degree to which their thinking is imperialistic [...]” (237).

If a work cited has multiple authors, all surnames should be listed and the last two authors separated by “and”, e.g.:

Minor literature should not be confused with “minority literature” [littérature mineure] (Deleuze and Guattari 16-27)

Footnotes are allowed only to: 1) add extra information or explanation that does not fit into the main text, or 2) point to additional bibliographic sources (which should also be referred to as in-text citations and listed in the Works Cited).
