Lexicographic and Textual Applications of Word Combinations Containing the Lexemes Loneliness and Lonely

Abstract

This study analyses various word combinations with the lexemes loneliness and lonely. The research is based on exemplifications originating from modern dictionaries of Polish as well as phrases and expressions used on some selected websites.

Most of the structures collected indicate that the lexemes loneliness and lonely are negatively charged regardless of the shades of meaning and context to which they apply. The combinations are often based on oppositions, which enhances the negative evaluation of the content conveyed. Furthermore, in the word combinations under study, man is often depicted as an object exposed to loneliness on which he or she has little influence.
