Abstract

The paper presents the eighteenth-century territory names of the former Chełm area with the formants -izna and -szczyzna. They are name-making formations in which one may find possessive or physiographic, possessive or cultural, possessive, physiographic or cultural semantics. The problem is complex therefore we must treat such microtoponyms as ambiguous.
