Abstract

The text is a semiotic analysis of an extremely important point in the urban space of Lublin. The Grodzka Gate proves to be both a real and a symbolic border between the Christian Upper Town and the Jewish Lower Town. As Władysław Panas shows the border was located exactly halfway between three Axes Mundi: the St Michael Archangel Church, the Transfiguration Orthodox Church and the home of the great tzaddik „The Seeing One of Lublin”. Also the series of photographs taken by Józef Czechowicz, in which -according to the researcher - the Lublin poet managed to grasp what is most important in the Gate, namely its essence, plays an important role in Panas’s interpretation.
