Abstract

It is mainly the religious and patriotic themes of Juliusz Słowacki's later poems that make them imbued with numerous symbols. For the purpose of this analysis, the author assumes a linguistic definition of symbol as a kind of figurative iconic sign, the sign that combines in its meaning the components of concretum and abstractum. During the analysis, she shows the linguistic and stylistic genesis of symbol, their connection with the tradition of the Bible, mainly Psalms, with everyday phraseology. The religious symbols appear in the poetry of various nineteenth-century poets, and some French symbolists (despite semantic indefiniteness proper to this trend), but has not lost their cognitive function. In Słowacki's lyrical poetry has been written in its Genesis conception.
