Musical Czechowicz

Abstract

The greatest musician in Polish poetry − a writer so original that it is enough to listen to two or three lines of his verse to unmistakably recognise the splendid transformation of the vague melodies of the heart into classically mature and eloquent words − Józef Czechowicz's poem. The article tries to show the phenomenon of Czechowicz's musical-literary uniqueness, making a leisurely analysis of the poem dawniej [at one time]. Czechowicz's whole literary output remains to be studied in this aspect. He was one of the greatest Polish poets of the 20th century and at the same time he was a poet of Lublin (he died in his home town during a German bomb raid on 9 September 1939 and he is buried at the Lipowa Street cemetery in the military section.
