Orphism in Callistratus’ Descriptions

  • Remigiusz Popowski

Abstract

Callistratus chose for his Descriptionsonly classical scluptures representing Orphic-Pythagorean theology. Descriptions reveal three principal Orphic ideas: union with multiplicity and unity, immortal soul and its unity with divinity, as well as love.

Callistratus described sculptures according to Orphic rules, refined by Pythagoreans, Plato and neo-Platonians. His ecphrases indicate a possibility to achieve ecstasy and to get filled with divinity by living a good ethical life or even worshipping mysteries, but rather by contemplating works of art born of divine inspiration.
