Abstract

This text focuses on the prominent Victorian figure, John Henry Newman (1801–1890), and how he responded to his ethos. It is assumed here that each person grows in confrontation with his or her place. The place in which we live, our genius loci, exerts some influence on our decisions. The most important thing is to find out what kind system is thus established. This system may be true or false. Newman valued highly his family home, his university friendships, and the Church as his ultimate destination. He was born in the Anglican Church at the time when the Anglican milieu was particularly hostile towards the Roman Catholics. His personal history is so fascinating because despite the surrounding hostilities, he managed to re-evaluate his life.
