This article presents theory and research associated with integrative complexity. Integrative complexity is defined in terms of two cognitive structural variables: differentiation and integration. Criteria for assessing integrative complexity and rules for encoding verbal protocols are presented. Applications of this construct to the various psychological and social problems are also summarized.
