The Eastern Border of the Republic of Poland And Its Control Performed by the Border Guard in the Years 1945-1991
Abstract
The present article is concerned with the issue of controlling the eastern border of the Republic of Poland by the Border Guard. the history of three Border Guard Brigades is discussed in it: that of the Podlaska, Nadbużańska and Przemyska ones, in the years 1945-1991. the author presents the organizational structure of the eastern brigades of the BG and points to the reasons why it was changed in the period when the Border Guard performed its duties in Poland. the conception of departing from the direct control of the eastern border of Poland in the years 1956-1957 that the author describes, is an interesting element of the article. Establishing only three maneuver groups, each numbering several dozen men, instead of the brigades was the cause why the Polish border was in fact controlled by the Soviet Border Guard only. the issue of the Border Guard and of controlling the eastern border of Poland after World War II requires further research on the part of the historians studying the problem. the Polish eastern border at the time of the Polish People's Republic remained in the shadow of both political and social events. the author hopes that the article to some extent helps explain the complicated issue of controlling the Polish border in the years 1945-1991.
