Dispositions Concerning the Mass Media in the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches
Abstract
The article deals with those dispositions of the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches (CCEO) which concern the mass media, collected in Chapter IV entitled: “De instrumentis communicationis socialis et in specie de libris”, Title XV, cann. 651-654, 660, 666, and cann. 352, 906, and 1448 § 1. The discussed norms can be divided into three categories: (a) a right to possess and use mass media, (b) rights and obligations of the Christian faithful regarding mass media, and (c) competences of eparchial bishops regarding the mass media. The legislator makes a reference to the teaching of the Second Vatican Council, post-conciliar instructions and directories, as well as dispositions of the Codes of Canon Law of 1917 and 1983. CCEO includes new provisions which have no counterpart in the code of Pope John Paul II.
